Many Christians quietly find the ascension of Jesus disappointing—even a little embarrassing—wondering why he would rise from the dead only to vanish into the clouds. But in the opening verses of Acts, Luke shows us that Jesus' ascension is essential to the good news we celebrate: his real human body is welcomed into heaven as our advocate, his followers are sent out to announce that he is the true King, and his Spirit comes down with power so that his work continues through the church. Far from a let down, the absence of Jesus turns out to be cause for celebration.
